What this means for your landed cost
Import duty is charged on the customs value of your goods, so it scales with every order. On a container of cotton bed linen or T-shirts, a 12% duty cut can be the difference between India and another sourcing country.
Three things decide whether the lower rate applies to your shipment:
- Your tariff code. Each product has an HS code, and each agreement sets a rate and a phase-out schedule per code.
- Rules of origin. The goods must count as Indian-made under the agreement. For textiles this often depends on where the fabric was made, not just where it was sewn.
- Proof of origin. The shipment needs the certificate or statement the agreement asks for, issued correctly before or at shipment.
We check this before we quote. Send us your product and destination and we'll confirm the duty that applies under the relevant agreement and build it into your landed-cost estimate.
Import VAT or GST in your country is separate and still applies (for example 20% VAT in the UK and 10% GST in Australia), though VAT-registered businesses usually reclaim it.
